God moved on the heart of a household maid named Mary Fisher (1623-1698). He gave her light by the Holy Spirit and she put her faith in Christ the Redeemer. She was filled with enthusiasm to deliver the message of salvation to Sultan Mehmed IV. He was the ruler of the mighty Ottoman Empire at that time. So, Mary traveled from England to Turkey under difficult circumstances and finally reached the Sultan. When she arrived, he was in a council meeting, surrounded by his ministers and senior statesmen. He received her as he would an ambassador! She told him that she had a message for him from the Great God. The Sultan gave her the freedom to declare God’s message without fear and assured her that he and his people had good hearts that were open to hear it.
After Mary bravely proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a clear and simple way, she asked if Sultan Mehmed IV had understood her. He answered, “Yes, and every word, and it is truth.”[1]
Many courageous men and women have witnessed to Muslim rulers. A famous example is Francis of Assisi who witnessed to Sultan al-Kamil.
Prayer
Lord God Almighty, Heavenly Father, I thank you because we can count on you to open doors for the Gospel (1 Corinthians 16:9). I pray for all Muslim rulers around the world—kings, presidents, prime ministers, and governors. Give us open doors to take the message of the cross to them.
Grant us courage to deliver a word from you that is anointed and powerful. Open rulers’ hearts to receive it as it is, the Word of God. May your sacrificial love make the hearers ready to believe in Jesus, not only as a prophet, but as God who became man to save us and give us eternal life.
Give rulers wisdom and light to know how to live for you as they govern their people. Give them grace to lead with righteousness and justice.
May their life under the banner of Christ be victorious as well as humble. Amen.
Promise
Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine (Psalm 16:5, NLT).
